Course Objectives and Description
Summer Intensive Level 1 is designed for beginners to establish a foundation necessary to move up to intermediate Japanese levels. This course emphasizes on improving conversation skills, including pronunciation and the Japanese writing systems; Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji.
At the end of the course a student will be able to:
- Read Hiragana and Katakana
- Read and write 165 basic Kanji
- Vocabulary - 630 words
- Understand Japanese basic sentence structure.
- Express actions in easy conversation during their daily life situations.
- Introduce himself/herself
- Go shopping
- Ask friends to hang out.
- Explain the condition of things, how they look
- Express the reason of one’s action
- Tell one’s wishes and hopes to others
- Tell the location of a thing or a person
- Give directions, make a request

3rd and 4th year high school Japanese or 2nd year college level Japanese
- Class hours: Approx. 150 hours

- Prerequisite: Japanese 1 & Japanese 2 or equivalent knowledge
Course Objectives and Description
Summer Intensive Level 2 is designed for intermediates to establish a higher level of basic Japanese grammar and sentence structures to move up to advanced Japanese levels. Students will also learn how to write composition. The course emphasizes on improving conversation skills including pronunciation and the Japanese writing systems: Kanji.
At the end of the course a student will be able to:
- Read and write 228 Kanji, a total of 393 Kanji combined with Level 1
- Vocabulary - 835 words, a total of 1,465 words combined with level 1
- Understand Japanese basic sentence structure
- Give opinions of one’s own
- Direct someone to a place
- Explain how to use items / tools
- Explain about the favors others did for him/her with gratitude
- Deal with problems by asking for direction and advices
- Talk about one’s custom
- Give one’s feedback or explain about things by reciting reasons to back it up
- Explain the conditions of things around
- Talk under assumptions that certain event will happen or not
- Talk about what one is capable of doing
- Talk about what one can do with certain items or at certain places
- Talk about future plan and schedule
